MARCHING BAND & COLOR GUARD
If my student is in Marching Band - do they attend all football games and what do they wear?
Marching and Color Guard students attend select HOME football games, including the Homecoming Game.
Marching Band students typically wear the WHS Bands & Guard T-shirt they purchase at the beginning of the school year with jeans to football games. (For more information about T-shirts contact Spirit Wear Coordinator Venus Carda.
At Homecoming Game students wear their Marching Uniform.
What kind of Marching do they do?
Students compete and perform street/parade marching. Percussion often has a separate competition at competitions as well. See VIDEO
How much are Marching Band Uniforms?
WHS Band Boosters cover the cost of Marching Band and Color Guard uniforms. However, families need to purchase shoes, gloves and socks. Parents are also asked to pay a fee to cover dry cleaning at the end of the season.
Will my student be provided with food at Marching Competitions?
The WHS Band Boosters provides at least one hot meal and/or snack at each competition. Many competition locations have snack bars and food trucks. We encourage you to visit the websites of school competition locations for more information as well.
Will they practice before or after school?
Not usually. WHS Marching Band/Concert Band rehearse during class time. They do, however, have a Super Saturday (See Calendar) to kick off the marching season with rehearsals and clinics. Students practice during the March-A-Thon fundraiser after school at the beginning of the Fall term to raise money for their student accounts for Fall Tour.
How should long-haired students in Marching Band do their hair before a competition?
Students with long hair should arrive before every competition and on the bus with their hair up in a high, tight ponytail or bun. Sides should be smooth and "in place," especially around the ears and the nape of the neck. Bobby pins and hairspray work well. Another idea that works well is to us an elastic headband that matches your hair color. There is often not enough time for touch-ups and fine tuning before a competition. Doing the bulk of hair prep before arriving helps ensure the marching band is on time for a great competition.
What to wear under the marching uniform?
Students need white T-shirts (no tank tops) and black shorts (optional) under uniforms, along with long black socks for marching competitions and Fall Tour. Also, no make-up, jewelry or nail polish. The goal is complete uniformity!
